Solar Panels & Concrete

Hello,

We are moving the factory, from the southern end of Kathmandu to the northern end. The primary reason is because the ground water here naturally contains too much iron which can affect the dyeing process. The cost of having water brought by truck from an area without the iron is getting too expensive (it's also wasteful).

The new factory will have access to iron-free ground water, more space and conveniently is in a part of the valley which is full of women who are skilled handknitters. So expect to see more items like these 'oh so cute' baby socks/booties on www.mypashmina.co.uk.

Most of the building work in Kathmandu is in concrete. Personally I think it is quite ugly - and the old building style from clay bricks and wood looks nicer. Also the sand to mix with the cement is dredged from the Bagmati river. This is killing the river - as when the river loses it's sand plants grow in from the banks shrinking the river. The other disadvantage of concrete is the amount of CO2 released in the production of cement.

With this in mind, we are keeping the use of concrete in the factory to a minimum. We will have wood floors in most of the production areas, brick walls, bamboo supports and (as in 99% of factorys in Kathmandu) a corrigated iron and glass fibre roof. The wood costs about double the concrete - which explains why nearly all new buildings here are concrete.

We wanted to run the factory completely with solar power (You can import solar panels tax and duty free if you get approved by the government, but can't get approved without having a quality test on 3 types of panels - and they can't test until they have set the fee - which has been in discussion for at least 2 months .... I may be getting cynical, but can't help wonder who benefits from this??).

However we will have the lighting solar powered. This can be expanded later to power the washing machines and dryers. We don't use the horribly noisy 'power looms' so we don't have to have electricity to power them. All our cashmere knitwear and pashminas are made on hand looms.

If anyone wants to find out the test fee , or ask about the testing procedure the email address is sets@ntc.net.np .

We will be back in Nepal in February, at the crucial stage of the building work.

Mypashmina gives 185,400Nprs to Namaste Banepa

Thanks to all the Mypashmina customers that have donated to our favourite charity - Namaste Banepa. In the last year you have raised over £1500. I would like to especially thank the 7 people who donated £50 - as promised I matched your donations, so its an extra £350 in the pot.

We are in Kathmandu now, and have just been to visit the person who runs Namaste Banepa. His name is Sudarson Karki, and he spends his time making films to promote awareness about issues in Nepal.

Here is a new film, including the kids that go to school in Banepa.

Nepalese children sing a song for peace. In this video some children are from a school in Banepa near Kathmandu, and some are from an international school in Kathmandu. The children from Banepa come from poor families and are supported by a charity called Namaste Banepa (namastebanepa.com). The pay for books, clothes and fees. They also take time to persuade parents that it is better for the kids to be in school rather than helping them on the land.

To find out more visit www.namastebanepa.com - If you want to donate, you can do so on the basket/checkout page of www.mypashmina.co.uk - we cover all transaction fees so anything you donate goes straight to the kids. Currently 35 children are being kept in school.

This week at the cashmere factory

This week at the cashmere factory in Kathmandu....

1. We have put in a new rubbish sorting system.

We have put extra bins everywhere, and some big bins near the entrance ready for collection.

The tiny bits of waste cashmere that were thrown away before, are now being collected, and put inside nice cushion covers. (The result is cushions containing about $150 worth of cashmere by weight!). The are for workers who mostly sit down while doing there work and for decoration.

The paper and card will be sold to a recycling company for 2 rupees per kilo.

The hard plastic and metal will be collected by someone who then sells it.

The soft plastic - which there is not much will go to the city dump (not to the Bagmati river, where a lot of rubbish collectors dump their rubbish .. grrrr!)

2. A shiney new noticeboard is clear to see in the middle of the factory
We found from our questionnaire of the staff that they would like to know more about what is going on in the factory, and indeed to work closer with the management. So a noticeboard is a simple solution.

The first things to go on the noticeboard are:
a. News about the new rubbish sorting
b. Information about training options
c. Information about new monthly meetings between different departments and factory management
d. News of a staff picnic on the 20th December - and the planned activites
e. The factory mission (in many Chinese factorys I saw big slogans on the walls). I asked for these to be translated and found out they said things like "Work hard today, and you will have a job tomorrow"). I thought this was a bit threatening - especially in 6ft high red letters! But the idea of having reminders in the factory about the mission for quality and timeliness are good.

3. Quality Control Book
Every piece of cashmere knitwear that is made is thoroughly checked (when i have a good internet connection, i will put some videos of this online).

Now, records of every item are being kept, so at the end of every day it can be reviewed and system inprovements can be made.

Also at the end of every week, statistics from the book can be collected, and displayed on the noticeboard in order to (hopefully) show everyone the continual improvement.

Thats all for now. Today Caroline is making the voiceover on a video about the situation of women in western Nepal - which is shocking and tragic (and will be uploaded once we have decent internet connections) - Doctors and money required .. if anyone out there wants to help contact us, and we will put you in touch with the right people .

Paul & Caroline In Nepal - p2

The factory where your pashminas and knitwear is made , is pretty nice. It is on the edge of Kathmandu and is in a peaceful valley, with lots of green space. It has an open courtyard and is clean with a friendly atmosphere. We have visited a number of factories in the area which are not as nice.

However, we are working to improve our factory further.

This week we gave all the employees a questionnaire. We made it clear that the factory managers would not see individual questionnaires, and we took them to a friend in Kathmandu to translate the answers for us.

Some interesting issues have arisen from this , and we are working now to implement improvements.

1. We have set up a proper rubbish sorting system.
2. There will now be monthly meetings in each department to keep the staff and management close and communicating well

got to go... power cut in 3 minutes!

Christmas comfort...

After all the lovely temptations over the Christmas holiday (chocolates...cake...pudding...sherry...the list is endless!) wouldn't it be wonderful to relax in style without showing off any added lumps and bumps?

No need to look any further as we have the perfect solution in our great new ladies Deep Cut Relaxed V Neck! Still as wonderfully stylish as our classic Fitted Ladies V but with a more generous cut and relaxed fit this jumper is the ultimate in cashmere cosiness. Great for informal parties and country walks and available in five lovely colours - you can't really go wrong!

Thanks,

Sara

Paul & Caroline In Nepal

We are in Nepal at the moment, working to improve the factory, work on new ideas, and make sure everyone is happy.

Today we walked to the local shop, and asked them for their onion skins.. a gang of people gathered around and were pretty close to falling over with laughter.. WHO WOULD WANT ONION SKINS ??? THEY MUST BE MENTAL ?? .. if only my Nepalese was better!

The shopkeeper obliged, and 15 minutes later we had a carrier bag full of onion skins. We took these back to the factory, and boiled them up in an iron pot.

Then we dyed some pashminas with them for varying lengths of time... the result ? Perfect, rich natural yellows .. with the raw materials free of charge, and completely natural... We'll wait until tomorrow before washing the dyed pashminas to see if they dye has held properly.

Due to this small success we are keen to make more completely natural dyes from locally available herbs, spices, vegetables, minerals and anything else that works.

So if anyone has any good ideas, please do email.. paulking@mypashmina.co.uk i'll make sure you get at least 10% off your order, if it's a workable idea!

Thanks

Paul

The swatchbook of 2008

If you've been to Mypashmina.co.uk lately you probably noticed that we introduced our new swatchbook this summer. A lot of effort was put into this swatchbook to make sure we have every colour you would ever need, while still being small enough for us to send it out to you. All of the 117 new colours are Pantone colours to make it easier for you to find matching cashmere products for the rest of your wardrobe.

This pile of beautiful colourful greens and blues (and a little yellow) gives you alternatives of colours that could brighten your outfit. The colours you see are, in order from the top: mp12 Buttercup, mp89 Lime Green, mp85 Forest Green, mp90 Online Lime, mp93 Verdant Green, mp94 Ultramarine Green, mp96 Biscay Bay, mp97 Enamel Blue, mp106 Princess Blue.

As you can see we have several different shades of off-white to perfectly match your outfit. Because of the delicate cashmere fibre we will never be able to offer you a pure paper white, but the whitest shade we have is completely undyed and perfectly natural. The bleaching we would have to use to make a pure white would destroy the cashmere fibre, so watch out when looking at pashminas from other sources. The colours you see in this pile are, in order from the top: mp1 White, mp2 White Sand, mp10 Winter White, mp77 Silver Birch, mp76 Sandshell, mp11 Italian Straw, mp78 Green Haze, mp40 Barely Pink, mp100 Blue Glow.

If you prefer the elegant and muted shades, there is a wide range of muted colours in the swatchbook. This pile shows you only some of the purple and pink shades, but we do have muted shades of every colour of the rainbow. The colours you see here are, in order from the top: mp54 Nightshade, mp63 Rabbit, mp58 Purpla Ash, mp42 Wood Rose, mp43 Withered Rose, mp44 Wild Ginger, mp31 Raspberry Wine, mp27 Rhododendron.

Not all of these colours are in stock in every model and size, but for no extra cost at all we can have any pashmina or cashmere knitwear made for you in only 3-4 weeks from any colour in the swatchbook. That's the way we do things at Mypashmina.co.uk

We just tested our cashmere and it's 100% !

We have just sent a pashmina for testing at SGS fibre testing labs. The result shows it is pure cashmere. This is the usual result, so it's not so exciting.

However, it is good to know, because there is a lot of cheating in the cashmere industry ... even Tescos got in trouble once for unknowingly having 7% rabbit hair mixed in !

If you are buying cashmere online, ask to see a copy of a test certificate. A good supplier (like Mypashmina!) will be happy to show you.

Cashmere for pets

I brought my cat (which is called Adolf shicklgrüber because he has a mustasch) into the office today and tried on a baby cardigan. Now, how cute is that?

The baby cardigan fits just great. Maybe a little bit bigger neck and slightly shorter legs. It would work to wear it outside, if it drizzles a bit you can shake the cardigan easily as the raindrops sets on the edges of the fibres. Would you like this item made? Maybe you have a cat/dog that you would like to give a little something for these cold and rainy days? It would cost just £34 for a pure cashmere cardigan.

You can just email or phone us. See www.mypashmina.co.uk for more ideas and contact details.

It looks quite similar to one that we have available for £79.50 (the pink one) , the weave looks similar and from the picture in Vogue it looks like they have used the same '100 count' fine cashmere as in ours. One difference is that the LP one is mixed with some silk.

Colorganic collection now in stock!!

We decided to do something more with bamboo rather than just eating it or building with it. Bamboo is amazing. You would see surprised to see how soft it feels!

Bamboo is slightly shiny, like silk, but it has the feel of cashmere though not as warm. Bamboo is hypo-allergenic and good for people with sensitive skin. Some people call it eco-cashmere. We have decided to take the bamboo idea further and mix it with cashmere.

80% bamboo and 20% cashmere is the perfect mix. It gives you the warmth and yet more softness! Bamboo is a great plant because its also a weed which means it grows very fast, up to a meter per day, and therefore no fertilizers or pesticides are needed. The bamboo is organic, and so is the cashmere. We have revived old dyeing techniques using plants and metals. This is called vegetable dyeing.

In the end we have created a range with some very nice colorganic bamboo/cashmere knitwear that feels great, looks gorgeous and is eco!

Top quality cashmere at Mypashmina

Did you know that not all Cashmere is the same quality? We here at Mypashmina do our utmost to ensure that you only receive the highest quality garments. Firstly, we regularly send our products for testing. On the right is one of our test certificates to prove we only supply pure cashmere. We do this every few months. When buying cashmere its important to look into where it comes from and the actual cashmere contents if you want to be that its pure, as there are so many underhand producers and manufacturers on the market. Its not unusual to find cashmere products claiming to contain 100% cashmere when it actually contains a mix of wool, rabbit fur and other unidentifiable materials.

If ever in doubt, just give us a call and we will be happy to explain the origin or our Cashmere for you.
